Proprietary trading firms offer funded accounts to traders who can demonstrate consistent profitability without excessive risk. The catch: you must pass an evaluation phase that typically requires reaching a profit target (8-10%) without exceeding a maximum drawdown (4-10%).

Critical Parameters for Evaluation Phases

Drawdown Protection

This is your most important configuration. Set your maximum drawdown at least 1% below the firm's limit to account for slippage and spreads. If your firm allows 5% max drawdown, configure Genesis for 4%.

Enable daily loss limits at roughly half your max drawdown. This ensures a single bad day can't end your challenge.

Risk Per Trade

Keep individual trade risk between 0.5% and 1% of your account. Higher risk might reach targets faster but dramatically increases the probability of hitting drawdown limits.

The math is simple: at 1% risk per trade with a 1.5:1 reward ratio, you need approximately 50 winning trades to reach a 10% profit target. At 2% risk, you only need 25—but a string of 3-4 losses could end your challenge.

Session Controls

Most prop firms track your drawdown in real-time. Configure Genesis to avoid trading during high-risk periods:

News events: Disable trading 30 minutes before and after high-impact news

Session overlaps: Consider avoiding the volatile London/New York overlap if your strategy is sensitive to spreads

Fridays: Reduced activity or complete avoidance before weekend gaps

Recovery Settings

During evaluation phases, keep recovery/martingale systems conservative or disabled. The goal isn't maximum profit—it's demonstrating consistent, controlled trading.

Post-Evaluation: The Live Account

Once funded, your approach can evolve. Some firms allow more aggressive trading on live accounts, while others maintain strict risk rules. Always read the fine print.
